Program Curriculum

During your one-year programme, the taught element of the degree will typically be two to five compulsory courses depending on your programme.

For Mathematical Physics this will include three compulsory courses, as well as a number of specialised courses tailored to your interests.

Option courses

You will select between 40 and 70 credits from standard theoretical physics and mathematical physics courses. 

For the Mathematical Physics MSc, at least 20 credits of courses need to be selected from the School of Mathematics. Previous courses have included but were not limited to:

  • Symmetries of Particles and Fields
  • Gauge Theories in Particle Physics
  • Advanced Statistical Physics
  • General Relativity
  • Hamiltonian Dynamics
  • Quantum Theory

You will select 0 to 20 credits from further Physics and Astronomy courses. Previous courses included but were not limited to:

  • Introduction to Lie Groups
  • Algebraic Geometry
  • Functional Analysis
  • Real Analysis
  • Nonlinear Schrodinger Equations
  • Geometry of General Relativity

Typical offer

The typical offer is likely to be:

  • SQA Highers: AAAA.
  • A Levels: AAA.
  • IB: 37 points with 655 at HL.

Minimum entry requirements

  • SQA Highers: ABBB by end of S5 or ABBBB/AABB from S4-S6, to include Mathematics at Grade A and Physics (preferably at Grade A). We strongly recommend that you study Advanced Higher Mathematics.
  • A Levels: ABB in one sitting, to include Mathematics at Grade A and Physics (preferably at Grade A). Further Mathematics is recommended.
  • IB: 32 points overall and award of IB Diploma with 655 HL to include Mathematics at Grade 6 and Physics. Further Mathematics is recommended.

English Proficiency: IELTS 6.5 or equivalent.
