You need the following GPA score:

Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to 3 on a US 4.0 grading scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on a 4.0 scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).

Admission Requirements
  • Hold the equivalent of a U.S. Bachelor\'s degree. If you were educated outside of the United States, you must have earned a degree or diploma that SFSU considers to be the equivalent to a U.S. Bachelor\'s degree from a regionally accredited institution. An official determination of eligibility will be made during the application process.
  • Have the equivalent of a U.S. 3.0 GPA or "B" average. Your overall marks, average exam scores or average grade earned should be better than average or better than passing.
  • English language proficiency. You must demonstrate your English language ability by submitting a TOEFL or IELTS score that meets our minimum requirement or hold a U.S. Bachelor\'s or Master\'s degree. Individuals educated in English speaking countries do not need to provide a TOEFL, IELTS or PTE score.
  • The Division of Graduate Studies at San Francisco State University requires all applicants to submit official academic documents from all higher education institutions ever attended. An official academic document is a verification of your academic record issued directly from the university.
In addition to the materials sent to the graduate admissions office, the applicants must submit the following items to the English Department. Contact the graduate secretary in English for the department application and deadlines:
  • the departmental application;
  • at least two academic letters of recommendation, preferably from a current or former literature professor;
  • one official set of transcripts; a one to two page statement of purpose detailing why the applicant is interested in the study of literature;
  • and a writing sample (a critical or scholarly essay of five to ten pages, preferably one written as part of a literature course).
