Admission Requirements
Academic Requirements
You need the following GPA score:
Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to 3 on a US 4.0 grading scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on a 4.0 scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).
Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).
Admission requirements:
- Hold the equivalent of a U.S. Bachelor\'s degree. If you were educated outside of the United States, you must have earned a degree or diploma that SFSU considers to be the equivalent to a U.S. Bachelor\'s degree from a regionally accredited institution. An official determination of eligibility will be made during the application process.
- Have the equivalent of a U.S. 3.0 GPA or "B" average. Your overall marks, average exam scores or average grade earned should be better than average or better than passing.
- English language proficiency. You must demonstrate your English language ability by submitting a TOEFL or IELTS score that meets our minimum requirement or hold a U.S. Bachelor\'s or Master\'s degree. Individuals educated in English speaking countries do not need to provide a TOEFL, IELTS or PTE score.
- The Division of Graduate Studies at San Francisco State University requires all applicants to submit official academic documents from all higher education institutions ever attended. An official academic document is a verification of your academic record issued directly from the university.
- Applications for admission should include a statement of the applicant\'s purpose in applying to the program, a writing sample, and two letters of recommendation. Applicants whose native language is not English and whose B.A. is from a university in which English is not the medium of instruction, must have a minimum TOEFL score of 570 (computer-based TOEFL 230). The GRE is not required.
- Admission to classified standing in the program is given on evaluation of several factors in an applicant\'s education and experience. Of considerable importance are the subjects and range of undergraduate study; emphasis is given to courses in literature, history, languages, philosophy, the arts, cross-cultural and interdisciplinary humanities, but studies in the sciences or social sciences may also be valuable.
English Proficiency: IELTS 7 or equivalent.
