Academic Requirements

Applicants must upload the following items to the on-line application. All materials for the MFA in Production must be submitted online. Any materials sent by mail will not be considered. All materials, including letters of recommendation must be submitted by December 1, 2015 at 11:59pm EST, or the application will be incomplete and will not be reviewed by the admissions committee:

  • Resum\xc3\xa9: A document that highlights your education, creative endeavors, activities, travel, relevant employment and service work as they apply to your aspirations as a filmmaker (no longer than 3 pages).
  • Three Letters of Recommendation: Letters may come from any combination of academic and professional references. Personal recommendations will not be accepted. Letters of recommendation must be received by the application deadline of December 1, 2015 at 11:59pm EST. The application system will not send emails to your recommenders until the application has been fully submitted.
  • Statement of Purpose: The statement of purpose is really the \xc2\x93story of you\xc2\x94, describing how your past and current life experiences have motivated you to pursue a career in the filmmaking industry. The statement of purpose should be no more than 1000 words in length.
  • Writing Sample: A two-page non-dialogue scene about a person trying to kill a spider in his/her home. The scene should be considered the opening for a screenplay or theatrical work. Writing samples should be typed in 12-point Courier in standard play or screenplay format.
  • Creative Submission (OPTIONAL): A creative sample of work demonstrating your ability and commitment to storytelling. The sample must be uploaded online by way of a link within an uploaded document to the application. You are welcome to include a brief description that provides perspective on your submitted materials. No physical materials (faxed or mailed) will be considered. Choose no more than three (3)of the following:
  1. Film, video, animation, documentary or experimental work. Submissions must not exceed 15 minutes in length and can consist of reels, short films and/or clips from feature films. You must be part of the original creation of the work.
  2. Drawings, paintings, sculpture, costume or set design that illustrates your creative vision and style. Limited to 30 images total.
  3. Photography that explores your visual storytelling through up to 30 images.
  4. A writing sample composed of one of the following: a short play or screenplay, the first 20 pages of a full-length play or feature-length screenplay, a narrative short story, a feature article, or poem that exemplifies your ability to engage readers, up to 15 pages.
  • Graduate Assistantship Letter (OPTIONAL): If you would like to apply for a graduate assistantship with the College of Motion Picture Arts, please upload a one-page document describing your specific background and experience to the online application, such as teaching and administrative positions you have held. You may also include pertinent information concerning your financial circumstances.
  • Unofficial Transcript(s): Provide an unofficial scanned copy of your most recent transcript(s) indicating all college-level work. In addition, domestic applicants must complete and upload the self-reported undergraduate GPA computation worksheet.

English Proficiency: IELTS 6.5 or equivalent.
