Admission Requirements
Academic Requirements
You need the following GPA score:
Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to 2.75 on a US 4.0 grading scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on a 4.0 scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).
Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).
Admission Requirements
Applications for admission to a Master of Arts program in the Department of Teacher Education Programs are made to the Graduate Admission Office. Admission is based on a comprehensive review of multiple criteria, including the following:
- A completed application form to the MA program.
- New York state initial certification for teaching sciences, Biology 7-12, Chemistry 7-12, Physics 7-12, Earth Science 7-12 and General Science Extension. Applicants who have provisional certification should contact the Department of Teacher Education Programs for the correct program.
- A minimum grade point average of 2.75 in each of two categories:
- Overall undergraduate course work;
- Course work in the content area in which certification will be sought.
- A written personal statement of professional intent and rationale.
- Two letters of reference that address the applicant\xc2\x92s potential to succeed in the teaching profession and in graduate course work.
The department understands that any single criterion may not reliably predict a candidate\xc2\x92s potential for success in a graduate program. Candidates may wish to apply even if they do not meet one of the criteria but feel that other aspects of their experience may compensate.
Matriculated students must complete a minimum of 24 s.h. of the MA program in residence at Hofstra. No more than 9 s.h. may be transferred into the program. A maximum of 12 s.h. of graduate course work leading toward the MA degree may be completed prior to matriculation in the program.
