The University of Maryland's Department of Philosophy offers graduate programs leading to the Master of Arts (M.A.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees, emphasizing contemporary analytic philosophy and interdisciplinary research.
Admission Requirements:

Ph.D. Program:
- A strong academic record with at least 18 credit hours in philosophy, including courses in logic, ethics, epistemology, metaphysics or philosophy of mind, and two history of philosophy courses.
- Submission of official transcripts, three recommendation letters, a writing sample (20-25 pages), and a statement of purpose.
- GRE scores are optional.
- For non-native English speakers, TOEFL scores are required unless waived.

M.A. Program:
- Similar application materials as the Ph.D. program.
- Admission is competitive, with a limited number of candidates admitted annually.
The application deadline for fall admission is January 7. Spring admissions are uncommon.
Funding Opportunities:

Ph.D. Students:
- Most admitted Ph.D. students receive financial aid packages combining Research Assistantships, Fellowships, and Teaching Assistantships, providing at least five years of support.
- Packages include tuition remission and affordable health insurance.

- Funding is less commonly available for M.A. students.
