To study at the International Institute by Malta (IIBM), international students must obtain the appropriate visa based on their nationality and the duration of their course.
Visa Requirements
EU/EEA/Swiss Nationals: Students from these regions do not require a visa to study in Malta. However, if your stay exceeds three months, you must apply for a residence permit within 90 days of arrival.
Non-EU/EEA/Swiss Nationals: Students from other countries need a visa to study in Malta. The type of visa depends on the course duration:
Short-Term Courses (up to 90 days): Apply for a Schengen Short-Stay Visa (Type C). This visa allows stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period.
Long-Term Courses (over 90 days): Apply for a National Long-Stay Visa (Type D). This visa permits stays exceeding 90 days, up to 365 days.
Application Process
Acceptance Letter: Secure an official acceptance letter from IIBM.
Document Preparation: Gather the following documents:
Visa Application Submission: Submit your application to the Maltese embassy, consulate, or visa application center in your country. Processing times can vary, so apply well in advance.
Residence Permit: For courses longer than 90 days, apply for a Maltese temporary residence permit within the first three months of arrival. This permit allows you to stay in Malta for the duration of your studies.
Working While Studying
International students can work part-time (up to 20 hours per week) after completing 90 days of study in Malta. An employment license is required, and applications are subject to labor market tests.
Important Considerations
Financial Requirements: Ensure you have sufficient funds to cover tuition and living expenses. As of 2022, the minimum monthly requirement was €594.
Health Insurance: Obtain health insurance valid in the Schengen Area, covering at least €30,000.
Accommodation Proof: Provide evidence of accommodation arrangements in Malta.
