VISA INFORMATION
International students planning to study at Memorial University of Newfoundland (MUN) must secure a Canadian study permit before arriving in Canada. The process involves several key steps:
1. Obtain an Offer of Admission:
- Apply to your chosen program at MUN.
- Upon acceptance, receive an official offer letter from the Registrar's Office (for undergraduate programs) or the School of Graduate Studies (for graduate programs).
2. Apply for a Study Permit:
- Eligibility: Ensure you meet the eligibility criteria set by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
- Application Process:
- Complete the study permit application form available on the IRCC website.
- Prepare required documents, including proof of acceptance, proof of identity, and proof of financial support.
- Pay the application fee and submit your application online or through the designated visa office.
- Processing Time: Processing times vary; apply well in advance of your intended start date.
3. Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL):
- Some applicants may require a PAL as part of their study permit application. Consult MUN's Internationalization Office to determine if this applies to you.
4. Prepare for Arrival:
- Entry Visa: Depending on your country of residence, you may need a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) or an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) to enter Canada.
- Health Insurance: Arrange for health insurance coverage, as it's mandatory for international students in Canada.
- Accommodations: Secure housing arrangements prior to arrival.
5. Upon Arrival:
- Study Permit Issuance: Present your Letter of Introduction to the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) officer at your port of entry to receive your study permit.
- Social Insurance Number (SIN): If your study permit includes work authorization, apply for a SIN to work in Canada.
Additional Considerations:
- Accompanying Family Members: If family members are accompanying you, ensure they have the appropriate visas or permits.
- Study Permit Extensions: Monitor your study permit's expiration date and apply for extensions at least 30 days before it expires.
- Maintaining Status: Maintain full-time enrollment and satisfactory academic progress to comply with study permit conditions.
