Why Do Chemical Equations Need to Be Balanced?

The law of conservation of mass

In any ordinary chemical reaction, atoms are never created or destroyed — they're only rearranged into new combinations. If you start a reaction with 4 iron atoms and 6 oxygen atoms, you must end up with exactly 4 iron atoms and 6 oxygen atoms somewhere in the products — just bonded differently than before.

A chemical equation is "balanced" when it correctly reflects this: the same number of each type of atom appears on the reactant side (left) and the product side (right).

Coefficients vs. subscripts — a common point of confusion

These are easy to mix up, but they mean very different things:

  • A subscript (the small number within a formula, like the 2 in H₂O) tells you how many atoms of that element are in one molecule. You can never change a subscript — that would describe a completely different substance.
  • A coefficient (the number placed in front of a formula, like the 2 in 2 H2O) tells you how many molecules of that whole substance you have. This is the only number you're allowed to change when balancing an equation.

Balancing an equation is entirely about finding the right coefficients — never about touching subscripts.

Why this matters beyond the classroom

Balanced equations are what let chemists (and pharmaceutical manufacturers, and rocket engineers) calculate exactly how much of each ingredient a reaction needs, and exactly how much product it will produce.
