Admission Requirements

Academic Requirements

You need the following GPA score:

Required score: 3

Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to 3 on a US 4.0 grading scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on a 4.0 scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).

Applicants for graduate study in aerospace engineering and mechanics must apply online through the Graduate School.

Required materials are:

  • statement of purpose (include potential faculty advisors with similar interests and discuss post-graduation goals)
  • official transcripts
  • three letters of recommendation
  • appropriate test scores (GRE for all applicants except University Scholars and TOEFL/IELTS for international applicants)

Minimum graduate school requirements:

  • GPA: The applicant must have a degree and grade point average of 3.0 overall (4.0 system) from a regionally-accredited undergraduate or graduate program, or a degree and 3.0 for the last 60 hours from a regionally-accredited undergraduate program.
  • Entrance Exam: The applicant must have a score of 300 or higher on the GRE. Minimum requirements for TOEFLS and IELTS are 79 (iBT), 550 (pBT), or 6.5 (IELTS).
  • AEM department standards are higher than the graduate school minimums, and all application materials are carefully considered. Conditional admissions are sometimes granted, particularly for students entering the program without a BS in aerospace or mechanical engineering. These students must complete the following coursework at the undergraduate level from an accredited university (if not already completed): Calculus (12 credit hours), Ordinary Differential Equations, Statics, Dynamics, Mechanics of Materials and Fluid Mechanics. The calculus-based mechanics courses are available on-line at UA.

English Proficiency: IELTS 6.5 or equivalent.
