Admission Requirements

Academic Requirements

You need the following GPA score:

Required score: Upper Second Class

Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to Upper Second Class on the UK Honour scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on the UK Honour scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).

A 2:1 honours degree or equivalent in history or other humanities or social science discipline from a UK or overseas university. You may be asked to supply examples of previous written work.

You must be proficient in written and spoken English, normally demonstrated by grade C or above in GCSE English Language or an acceptable English language qualification.

For EU and International students, we accept qualifications from several countries, as well as a range of international qualifications and tests.

We also accept a range of other qualifications. The levels of achievement we normally require are detailed below. Please note that a few courses do not accept certain qualifications, or ask for higher levels of achievement. Where this is the case, it will be made clear on departmental webpages.

If you are presenting the NCUK English for Academic Purposes Module or the Trinity Integrated Skills in English, this should have been completed no more than two years before of the start date of your Sheffield course. For the other qualifications listed below, if they were completed more than five yearsbefore the start date of your Sheffield course, we may ask you to provide evidence of ongoing use of English.
