Admission Requirements
Academic Requirements
You need the following GPA score:
Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to 3 on a US 4.0 grading scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on a 4.0 scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).
Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).
Admission Courses
To begin the admission process, you complete:
- Proseminar: Research Methods and Scholarly Writing in the Social Sciences
- To register, you must either pass the critical reading and writing skills test, or complete a relevant expository writing course with a B grade or higher.
- You need to earn the minimum grade of B in a maximum of two registration attempts. The proseminar cannot be more than two years old at the time of application.
- One anthropology and archaeology course
- One anthropology and archaeology course or elective
You need to have an undergraduate degree to begin taking degree-applicable courses. The admission courses must be 4-credit, graduate-level courses. You complete all admission courses with a grade of B or higher, without letting your overall Harvard cumulative GPA dip below 3.0.
English Proficiency
You must prove English proficiency for admission to a degree program at Harvard Extension School if you did not earn a four-year bachelor\xc2\x92s degree from a regionally accredited college or university in the United States, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the Republic of Ireland, or the United Kingdom.
Undergraduate Degree Accreditation
You need a US regionally accredited bachelor\xc2\x92s degree from a college or university that was regionally accredited at the time of attendance, or its foreign equivalent with a degree conferral date that precedes enrollment in graduate-level courses taken with us.
If you already hold a graduate degree, you may earn a master\xc2\x92s degree provided the two degrees are in different fields.
International Credits and Degrees
If you earned credits or degrees outside the United States, you need to have the credentials verified by a specific third party. Canadian degrees earned at institutions where English was the primary language of instruction do not require credentials verification. The Admissions Office needs to receive an official evaluation in a sealed envelope from that agency.
English Proficiency: IELTS 7 or equivalent.
