Program Curriculum

Course Structure

  1. One semester (at least 3 credits) of upper-level statistics is required. Students must submit documentation to the graduate program director verifying that they have completed an appropriate class, or they must enroll in GES 5000: Statistical Analysis in Geography as part of their degree plan.
  2. Students must take GES 5770: History and Nature of Geography during their first Fall Semester, then GES 5010: Seminar in Geographic Research during the following Spring Semester.
  3. Students must enroll in the 5000 level class for any GES courses that are cross listed at both the 4000 and 5000 level. 4000 level cross-listed classes will not be accepted.
  4. Students may take a maximum of 6 credits at the 4000 level. Students who exceed this limit may petition for an exception.
  5. No courses below the 4000 level count towards the degree.
  6. A total of 6 credits of independent study (GES 9600) may be applied towards the degree.
  7. A maximum of 3 credits of Professional Experience (GES 4980) may apply towards the MA degree.
  8. A total of 9 graduate credits are transferable. Courses applied to a graduate degree elsewhere (or within the CU system) cannot be transferred for MA credit.

You need the following GPA score:

Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to 3 on a US 4.0 grading scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on a 4.0 scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).

Traditional Students (Students who hold an undergraduate degree from universities other than UCCS)
  • Hold a baccalaureate degree or a master\'s degree from an accredited college or university, or demonstrate completion of work equivalent to the baccalaureate or master\'s degree given at this University.
  • Have an undergraduate grade point average of 3.0 or better ("A" is equal to 4.0).
  • Have a minimum combined GRE score for the verbal and quantitative tests of 297 (revised general test) or 1000 (original general test), plus proficiency on the writing requirement. Recognize that there is a 6 to 8 week turnaround from when you take the test until we receive it. Plan accordingly. See www.gre.org for more information.
  • Have an area of specialization (i.e. research interests) that corresponds with the graduate faculty of the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies.
International Students (International students who hold an undergraduate degree from non-US universities)
  • English proficiency: TOEFL iBT requirement of 89, or IELTS requirements of 6.5 (Official TOEFL/IELTS scores are valid for two years). Applicants who have completed a post-secondary degree at U.S. institution also meet the English proficiency requirements. Applicants with combined score of 297 in GRE with proficiency on the writing requirements also meet the English proficiency requirements. Students who complete the UCCS Intensive English Program and score over 270 on the ACT Compass test will be considered meeting the admission requirements for the academic programs
Foreign transcripts evaluation:
  • If UCCS is unable to verify the accreditation information for a foreign institution, applicants will be required to submit a foreign degree evaluation from AACRAO or any NACES members.
  • If an applicant wishes to transfer any foreign graduate credits towards the graduate degree, a course-by-course foreign transcript evaluation from AACRAO
