Program Curriculum
Course Structure
- Successfully complete (C or higher) two out the following four basic course sequences:MATH 6360;6361: Applicable Analysis,MATH 6370;6371: Numerical Analysis,MATH 6382;6383: Probability and Statistics,MATH 6366, 6367: Optimization.
- Successfully complete another 6 credit hours of courses at the 6000 or 7000 level in the mathematics department, other than 6308,6309, 6312, or 6313. \x93Special problems\x94 courses may not be used to satisfy this requirement.
- Pass another 6 hours of elective course work approved by the Director of Graduate Studies. The elective courses need not be taken in the Mathematics department and may include some senior (4000) level undergraduate courses.
- Complete a tutorial project under the supervision of a faculty member. Students working on this project sign up for MATH 6315 and 7315: Master\x92s Tutorial. Alternatively, the student, with consent of his or her advisor, may decide to satisfy this requirement by taking two regularly scheduled classes.

Academic Requirements
To be considered for admission to the Department of Mathematics Graduate Program, we need the following information:
- Copies of your degree diplomas and official transcripts from each college or university at which you have been enrolled.
- Your GRE test scores (verbal and mathematics). A score from the Mathematics Subject Test (recommended).
- Three letters of reference, and one must be from a professional mathematician. We would prefer that all reference letters be from professional mathematicians.
- A resume that includes a description of any mathematical teaching or work that you have done and any prizes or awards received.
- A short statement of "Interests and Goals". This may include topics such as motivation for entering or returning to graduate school, expectations for your graduate training, mathematical preferences and interests and career goals. The application deadline, for U.S. students, for Fall and Spring admissions can be found here. There is no application fee for US applicants.
- If you would like to be considered for financial support or fellowships, please complete the admission requirements, and contact the Graduate Advisor for more details.

- are charged a nonrefundable application fee of US $75.00. This should be paid to the UH Graduate school as described on CougarNet.
- Take the TOEFL or IELTS test if they are not from an English speaking country or already have a degree from a US university. A minimum score of 550 on the TOEFL (or 213 on the computer or 79 on the internet versions) is required for admission. The minimium IELTS score is 6.5.
- An international student who does not receive a UH assistantship or fellowship must provide financial support information.
