Program Curriculum

Course Structure

  1. The curriculum consists of 33 required credit hours. A minimum of 21 hours must be taken in the Sociology Department. The remaining 12 hours may be taken in sociology or another area with approval.
  2. Of the total of 33 hours, at least 12 hours must consist of research methods or statistics, with a minimum of nine in sociology (up to three hours may be taken in other departments.) Any other courses in sociology may be taken to complete the 33 hours, including research methods, statistics, theory, or substantive courses and seminars.
  3. Internship opportunities will be made available.

Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to 3 on a US 4.0 grading scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on a 4.0 scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).

  • The program is available to students of all majors who have passed with a grade of \xc2\x93C\xc2\x94 or better a college-level course in social statistics and qualify on the other admissions criteria.
  • A minimum of a 3.0 grade point average for the last 60 hours of undergraduate work and a total of 300 on the verbal and quantitative portions of the GRE.
  • A personal statement of goals and anticipated plans.
  • Three letters of recommendation, two must be from college faculty.
  • An electronic copy of all transcripts, undergraduate and graduate, reflecting any academic work you have undertaken (copies to our Department can be unofficial but transcripts to FSU Graduate Admissions Office must be official)

English Proficiency: IELTS 6.5 or equivalent.
