Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to 3 on a US 4.0 grading scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on a 4.0 scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).

  • \xc2\xa0A Bachelor\'s degree with a major in Sociology, or related degree, and have earned a 3.0 GPA.
  • \xc2\xa0Completion of a minimum of one upper-division sociological theory course (equivalent to SOC 356 or SOC 357) and a research methods course (equivalent to SOC 355).
  • \xc2\xa0Students whose undergraduate work is deficient in sociology will be required to complete appropriate pre-requisite courses. Course deficiencies will be determined by the Department\'s Graduate Committee after taking into account each student\'s background and goals. Prerequisite courses will not count toward credit in the M.A.
  • \xc2\xa0Official scores from the Graduate Record Examination.
  • \xc2\xa0Official transcripts.
  • \xc2\xa0Three letters of recommendation, including at least two from individuals well acquainted with the applicant\'s academic ability.
  • A 3-4 page personal statement describing the student\'s qualifications and reasons for wanting to pursue an Applied Sociology M.A. at CSULB.
