Academic Requirements
Admission
An applicant must meet Graduate School requirements plus these departmental requirements to be considered for admission to the program:- Completion of 30 graduate course credits in art, including at least 18 in studio art, as required by the UWM Master of Arts in Art degreeor the equivalent. The applicant need not necessarily hold the Master of Science or Master of Arts degree.
- An applicant not holding a Master of Science or Master of Arts degree must also pass a written and oral qualifying examination.
- Submission of a digital portfolio of 20 slides or with 20 images of original work.
- Submission of a written personal statement of the proposed program of study.
- Three (3) letters of recommendation.
- If the applicant is continuing toward the MFA after completing coursework for Master of Arts in Art at UWM, a letter recommending continuation toward the MFA from the thesis examining committee will be accepted in lieu of slides, a personal statement, and letters of recommendation.
Applicants may be admitted with specific program-defined course deficiencies provided that the deficiencies amount to no more than two courses.
The student is expected to satisfy deficiency requirements within three enrolled semesters. The deficiencies are monitored by the Graduate School and the individual graduate program unit. No course credits earned in making up deficiencies may be counted as program credits required for the degree.Tuition & Financial Information
