Program Overview
In addition to providing knowledge in many fields of animal and human biology (physiology, histology, health and disease), the Bachelor includes courses in mathematics, physics, chemistry, and bioinformatics. The strong interplay between biology and informatics is the hallmark of this degree. The common courses between the two tracks initiated in year one, become progressively more specific, and more applied to biomedical research with data science and bioinformatics as one of the focus areas. The Bachelor in Life Sciences – Biomedicine is managed by the Department of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences. The academic team is made up of professors with expertise in biology, life sciences and bioinformatics from the University and partner Universities or research institutions, as well as experts in the field with knowledge of care environments in the Grand Duchy. At the end of the Bachelor, students are able to: Identify and apply key concepts and theories in basic sciences as foundation for interdisciplinary approaches. Relate and illustrate the fundamental principles and processes of biology (BLS-B)/biomedicine (BLS-BM), as per the current state of the art Identify the molecular, cellular, and tissue architecture of humans (BLS-BM), living animals or plant organisms (BLS-B), along with the basic principles of physiology governing it, as well as the existing interrelations with its environment (BLS-BM, BLS-B). Apply qualitative and quantitative scientific methods from relevant disciplines, understanding causes, managing risks and uncertainties, and analyzing setbacks constructively, individually or in groups, and thereby gaining autonomy whenever confronted with new professional situations or challenges. Apply basic scientific knowledge from relevant disciplines to solve experimental and theoretical scientific challenges and tasks with an integrated interdisciplinary approach. Perform experiments using modern techniques in biology (BLS-B) and biomedicine (BLS-BM). Analyse, interpret and critically review experimental results, including statistical evaluations. Perform basic scripting and basic computational analyses of biological and biomedical experiments. BLS-Com Basic Sciences 1 – Physics and Mathematics Language: FR Mandatory: Yes Les objectifs du cours sont la révision en profondeur et l’acquisition des outils de base des mathématiques, en logique, algèbre, géométrie (essentiellement analytique et vectorielle), trigonométrie, et analyse (étude des fonctions, des concepts élémentaires jusqu’à la théorie de l’intégration et les équations différentielles). A l’issue de cet enseignement, les étudiants devraient être capables De mettre en oeuvre les techniques et résultats étudiés au cours afin de résoudre des problèmes ; D’ utiliser correctement la terminologie et les résultats vus au cours; De formuler les résultats principaux étudiés au cours; De formuler des arguments mathématiques rigoureux.
