Program Overview
With an ageing population, qualified nurses in health and social care settings are required to be adequately prepared to provide high quality care for older adults. This course provides qualified nurses, with specific competencies and skills in the care of older adults as well as more general competencies, that will contribute towards their academic and professional development. The programme spans across preventive, medical, rehabilitative and palliative aspects of care across a range of settings, including community, hospital and long-term settings. Relevant topics such as dementia, nutrition and pharmacology are addressed. The programme of study shall consist of study-units to which not less than 80 ECTS credits shall be assigned, provided that depending on the qualification presented for admission into the Course, students may be required by the Board to follow and complete additional study-units to be eligible for the award of the Degree. Career Opportunities
Graduates of the programme will obtain a degree qualification and a specialization in elderly care nursing. The programme will prepare candidates to assume roles in the care of older adults that are living in the community, are in-patients in acute or rehabilitation hospitals or are residing in residential/nursing homes, by caring for their biopsychosocial needs to improve their health, wellbeing and quality of life. In terms of career prospects this programme gives graduates the opportunity to further their studies and proceed to a Masters degree.

Semester 2 Compulsory Units (All students must register for this/these unit/s) NUR3115 Dementia Care 8 ECTS (NC) NUR4147 ** Ethical Issues in the Care of Older Adults 10 ECTS ** Study-unit NUR4147 can be taken in Year 3 for students opting to finish the programme over three years. General Entry Requirements Refer to the list of country-specific qualifications Special Course Requirements the Higher Diploma in Health Science (Nursing Studies) or the Diploma in Health Science (Nursing Studies) awarded by the University of Malta, or a professional qualification deemed by Senate to be comparable to the qualifications indicated in paragraph (a).
