Admission Requirements

Academic Requirements

In addition to the general University requirements for admission to graduate studies, The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry requires the following of all applicants:
  • A minimum of 30 credits in chemistry, including a two-semester sequence in physical chemistry;
  • A one-year course in physics;
  • Mathematics through differential and integral calculus; and
  • Three letters of recommendation from individuals competent to evaluate the applicant\xc2\x92s scientific ability.

Foreign students must provide proper immigration documents and have a minimum TOEFL score of 550 for the paper-based test and 80 for the Internet-based test (22 for the speaking portion).

All prospective Chemistry students must complete an online application and a departmental application form in addition to their graduate application to the College of Arts and Sciences.

Students may complete up to 12 credits on a non-matriculated basis before formally applying to the program.

International admission requirements include the following items.
  • completed application form and application fee
  • original transcript of academic credentials (all credentials in languages other than English must be accompanied by certified English translations)
  • Transcripts from institutions not accredited in the United States or Canada must also be evaluated, course-by-course, by an organization that is a member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) or by the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (AACRAO)
  • official scores attained on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
  • official scores attained on the appropriate entrance examination required by the department
  • letters of reference (varies according to program)
Student Visas

International students requiring a student visa will also need to submit additional documents which are required by the United States Citizen and Immigration Services (USCIS). Upon admission to the University, the Office of International Programs will review these documents and determine if they are sufficient to issue an I-20. An I-20 is used to apply for an F-1 student visa.

The documentation necessary for an I-20 includes the following requirements.
  • Declaration and Certification of Finances with attached proof of ability to pay for the cost of education
  • Request for Certificate of Eligibility (I-20) form
  • International students currently residing in the United States must also fill out a Visa Sponsorship Transfer Form indicating the SEVIS release date
