Admission Requirements

Academic Requirements

You need the following GPA score:

Required score: 2.7

Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to 2.7 on a US 4.0 grading scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on a 4.0 scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).

  • Research Area
To qualify for admission to the program, you must be interested in pursuing research in one of the following areas:
  1. Analytical chemistry
  1. Biochemistry
  1. Inorganic chemistry
  1. Medicinal chemistry
  1. Organic chemistry
  1. Physical chemistry
  1. Prerequisites
  • Our program is intended for students with an undergraduate degree in chemistry or biochemistry, which is equivalent to the USF Bachelor of Science in Chemistry or Chemistry with a Concentration in Biochemistry (ACS-certified is desirable). This generally includes a third year course in physical chemistry, an advanced third or fourth year laboratory course (instrumental analysis, for example), and undergraduate research experience. Normally, an undergraduate degree in pharmacy or chemical engineering does not qualify for our MS program. If a graduate student is lacking proper preparation for graduate work based on our assessment of performance on entrance exams in two subject areas, then some advanced undergraduate coursework will be required.
  • Bachelor\'s Degree
A bachelor\'s degree in any scientific field from a university-level institution with a GPA of 2.7 or higher in a bachelor\'s degree program and 3.0 in upper-division coursework in the field of chemistry.
  • Statement of Purpose
A two-page, double-spaced statement that describes any of your research experience in chemistry or biochemistry, identifies research groups at USF that are of interest to you, and explains your goals in pursuing a graduate program in chemistry.
  • Resume
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Tests and GPA Requirements
  • The GRE general score is required and a subject score in chemistry is strongly encouraged.

English Proficiency: IELTS 6.5 or equivalent.
