Admission Requirements
Academic Requirements
You need the following GPA score:
Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to Upper Second Class on the UK Honour scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on the UK Honour scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).
Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).
The normal entry requirement is at least an upper second class honours degree, or an equivalent standard in other qualifications approved by the University, in chemistry or a closely related subject. Non-UK applicants will usually have completed 4 years or more in higher education. Students who have achieved a lower second honours degree will only be admitted in exceptional circumstances. At interview you will need to be able to demonstrate that your first degree prepares you for the modules available within your pathway, for example organic chemistry modules assume a knowledge of organic nomenclature, reactions and their mechanisms.
Candidates who do not hold any of the above qualifications, but who have relevant professional experience may be eligible for admissions, but are advised to contact the MSc Admissions Tutor prior to applying.
The selection process will involve close scrutiny of your academic credentials in a process that will include an interview (via Skype for students not available to come to Southampton). The whole process is supported by a Post Graduate Admissions Administrator who remains in touch with students throughout the application process.
A minimum standard of English Language is required. You will need a band C pass in one of the tests listed at:
- IELTS (International English Language Testing System)
- TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)
- Pearson PTE (Academic)
- Cambridge English: Proficiency and Advanced
- Cambridge English First (FCE) \xc2\x96 only acceptable to applicants applying for foundation year programmes
- Trinity College London ISE (Integrated Skills in English)
English Proficiency: IELTS 6.5 or equivalent.
