Academic Requirements

You need the following GPA score:

Required score: Upper Second Class

Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to Upper Second Class on the UK Honour scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on the UK Honour scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).

Minimum academic requirements:
2:1 BA degree with honours (or overseas equivalent) in Classics, Classical Studies, or a closely related subject.

Applicants must be able to read texts in Latin and/or Greek. The Department offers a Graduate Diploma in Classical Studies, which can act as a conversion course for those with degrees in other areas who want to go on to take the MA Classics.

  • Your application will be assessed by the Postgraduate Admissions Tutor, and by other academics as appropriate. We do not usually interview applicants, but we do encourage you to visit the department before applying, or after we have made you an offer. Alternatively we can arrange to talk to you by telephone or Skype. We aim to process all applications within four weeks although this may take longer in February and March, and over holiday periods.
