Academic Requirements
You need the following GPA score:
Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to 3.3 on a US 4.0 grading scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on a 4.0 scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).
Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).
International Graduate students:
- Permanent Residents: Copy of Alien Registration card/Legal Permanent Resident card.
- Financial Statement of Responsibility for students needing an F1 or J1 visa

Admission Requirements
Eastern Michigan University\'s General Graduate School Admission Requirements
Applicants must have earned a four-year baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited U.S. institution, or an equivalent degree from a non-U.S. institution.A minimum cumulative undergraduate grade point average of 2.7 on a 4.0 scale, or 3.0 in the last half of the undergraduate program. Some departments require higher minimum GPAs; see specific program requirements. Applicants who do not meet minimum admission requirements may be considered for conditional admission.
All prospective Graduate students should submit:

- Application fee ($45)
- Official transcripts from all previously attended colleges/universities (EMU alums do no need to request official transcripts).
Additional requirements, such as standardized test scores, letters of recommendations, department applications or teacher certification, are determined by each academic department. See program requirements noted in the Graduate Catalog.
Students with non-U.S. post-secondary credentials must submit an evaluation of their international transcripts from the Educational Perspectives (EP) credential evaluation service.
Applicants must have:
- A Bachelor\xc2\x92s degree from a regionally accredited institution.
- Evidence of academic aptitude for graduate-level study, that includes at least one of the following: a. A 2.75 overall undergraduate GPA, or a 3.0 GPA in the second half of the undergraduate degree program. b. A graduate GPA of a 3.3 on a previously completed advanced degree. c. The GRE scores may not be more than five years old. The student must score at the 50 percentile or above to be accepted. d. Applicants not meeting other criteria, but having an acquired knowledge of the counseling field based on five years of related experience, may be eligible. Students applying under this provision must contact the coordinator of advising for specific procedures prior to applying to the Office of Graduate Studies and Research.
- English language proficiency: International students must meet at least one of the following additional criteria:
- An official score report from either the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), International English Language Test System (IELTS), or the Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB) must be sent by the testing service directly to the University. Student score reports, faxes or photocopies will not be considered official. Minimum scores for admission is 550 (Paper-based Test), or 79 (Internet-based Test) for the TOEFL; 77 on MELAB; or 6.5 (or higher) on the IELTS. If the TOEFL is taken, the Test of Written English (TWE) is also required. A conditional admission may be available to those students falling just below the minimum score requirements.
- Personal Statement: A one-page narrative statement focusing on the applicant\xc2\x92s motivation and rationale for seeking admission to the Clinical Mental Health Counseling program as well as his or her background and goals related to professional studies, and goals for working in the mental health field.
- Experience: Relevant experiences in helping that may consist of paid professional work or structured volunteer experiences, that provides evidence of the applicant\xc2\x92s commitment and understanding of the mental health field. These experiences may be referenced in the above Statement of Intent, and must be documented in the resume.
- R\xc3\xa9sum\xc3\xa9: A focused, summary of program-relevant educational, career and/or life experiences.
- Three recommendations: These must be completed on recommendation forms available from the department. They should be completed by professionals with knowledge of the applicant\xc2\x92s suitability for graduate work (e.g., supervisors, undergraduate professors) in helping professions.
