Admission Requirements

Academic Requirements

You need the following GPA score:

Required score: 2.75

Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to 2.75 on a US 4.0 grading scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on a 4.0 scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).

Minimum Program Requirements:
  • A baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college or university with an overall minimum 2.75 undergraduate grade point average on a 4.0 scale. Undergraduate coursework must contain 48 semester credits (or equivalent in quarter hours) in the liberal arts.
  • Baccalaureate degree must show completion of a statistics course with a C- or higher.
  • Have demonstrated apptitude with acceptable test scores from the GRE. Certified teachers applying for the MA in School Counseling may submit a copy of their teaching certificate and passing PLT scores in lieu of GRE scores. Applicants who hold a conferred Master\'s degree or higher will be waived from the GRE.

Successful completion of an interview with the Graduate Counseling Program Admissions Committee and recommendation from the committee to admit from the admissions committee to ensure the candidate holds qualifications and a personal disposition to uphold ethical standards of the counseling profession.
To complete an application file, please provide:
  • An online application for admission to Northern Kentucky University (apply online)
  • Transcripts for all undergraduate and graduate work. Transcripts should be sent directly to the Office of Graduate Programs by the colleges or universities one has attended
  • Submission of recent scores on the Graduate Record Exam (GRE). If you already hold a conferred Master\'s degree you do not need to take the GRE. For applicants to the school counseling program you may submit a copy of your Praxis II Principles of Teaching and Learning (PLT) if you are a certified teacher
  • Supplemental Application
  • Three letters of recommendation from professionals familiar with the applicant\'s academic performance, work experience, or potential for becoming a professional counselor. References must be on the Master of Counseling Recommendation Form. At least one letter must be academic (i.e., written by a professor or an instructor). We understand that for some applicants, contacting former instructors is not feasible; in these situations, professional references, written by supervisors or managers who are familiar with your work, are also acceptable. Each reference should e-mail their recommendation form (from the person making the recommendation) to gradprog@nku.edu.
  • Updated resume tailored to graduate school
  • School counseling applicants must also submit a Criminal Background Report (Federal & State). The background check will be waived if an applicant has a teaching certificate from KYEPSB or ODE or IDE and submits a copy of that instead (substitute teaching certificates or emergency teaching certificates are not acceptable)
