Find out more The MA in Community Music will enable you to facilitate inclusive and creative music activities with diverse groups of people in a variety of social contexts and for a range of purposes, including education, healthcare, leisure, social justice and wellbeing. The course will provide you with the skills and knowledge needed to design and deliver participatory projects, and to carry out primary research using practice-based approaches, critical thinking and safe data management. The course builds skills in practical musicking and critical reflection and nurtures your ability to move flexibly across the diverse contexts encountered in the field of community music. This practical approach is complemented by topics in arts administration, project management and underpinning philosophies.

Program Curriculum
Course content
The MA Community Music is based on a series of modules, seminars and a supervised independent study module.
You'll cover a range of topics relating to professional issues in community music.
In addition to the modules, we strongly encourage you to engage with local community music opportunities, participate in musical ensembles and attend weekly research seminars, performance classes and composition seminars relevant to your studies.
Modules Research project Modules Core modules Community Music in Principle Facilitation Skills: Theory and Practice Groupwork, Arts Administration, and Project Management History, Practice and Study of Community Music Specialisms and Contexts Option modules You will choose one option module. Examples may include: Case Studies in Music History 2 Collaborative Project Creative and Critical Practice 1 Empirical Research for Music Enhanced Student-centred Pedagogy Music Across the Lifespan 2: Music In the School Years & Beyond Some option module combinations may not be possible. The options available to you will be confirmed after you begin your course. Our modules may change to reflect the latest academic thinking and expertise of our staff, and in line with Department/School academic planning. Research project You'll begin work on the Capstone Project with sufficient time to plan your fieldwork. You'll have the freedom to take on a project relevant to your own interests.
