Academic Requirements
You need the following GPA score:
Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to 3 on a US 4.0 grading scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on a 4.0 scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).
Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).
In addition to fulfilling Graduate School requirements, applicants to the M.F.A. degree program should present a 3.0 GPA. Applications must be received by January 17. Admission is for the Fall semester only. All application materials must be submitted electronically through the Graduate School\'s Apply Yourself/Hobson\'s application system.
- Non-refundable application fee ($75) for each program to which an applicant applies.
- Unofficial transcripts of your entire college/university record (undergraduate and graduate), including records of any advanced work done at another institution. Electronic copies of these unofficial transcripts must be uploaded along with your on-line application. Official transcripts will be required after an applicant is admitted to the program.
- Three Letters of Recommendation. \xc2\xa0In your on-line application, please complete fully the information requested for your recommenders and ask them to submit their letters electronically.\xc2\xa0
- We recommend but do not require that our applicants take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) before applying to the program. If you have taken the GRE, please arrange for your official GRE scores to be sent directly to the Graduate School by the Educational Testing Service. The University of Maryland\'s institutional GRE code is 5814.
- Statement of Goals, Research Interests, and Experiences. The statement, which should not exceed 1000 words, should address relevant aspects of your educational experience, your creative interests, and your reasons for applying to our program.\xc2\xa0
- A single Creative Writing Sample in the genre in which you are applying: for fiction, 25 pages (double-spaced); for poetry, 10-15 pages (single-spaced). To ensure that your application package is processed accurately, you must specify your genre (fiction OR poetry) in the on-line application.
English Proficiency: IELTS 7 or equivalent.
