Admission Requirements

Academic Requirements

You need the following GPA score:

Required score: 2.75

Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to 2.75 on a US 4.0 grading scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on a 4.0 scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).

Basic Requirements
In addition to the requirements listed at each program link, all students are required to submit the following items. International applicants should visit here for additional requirements.
  • Official transcripts from ALL previously attended colleges and universities
  • International students must have their transcripts articulated. Transcripts that have not been articulated can be submitted for the application process; however, before registering for classes, the transcript must be articulated and submitted to the Graduate School.
  • Proof of grade point average of at least 2.7 on a 4.00 scale, including post-baccalaureate hours
  • Official standardized test scores taken in the last 5 years, if required by the prospective program
  • $40 application fee
  • A copy of your government-issued photo ID
  • Proof of 2 MMR vaccines.
International Applicants
  • An online graduate application.
  • $40 application fee. All applicants must pay a non-refundable $40 application fee before their application can be processed. To pay this fee, please contact Student Accounts at 501.569.3450.
  • Proof of English proficiency. All international students must provide an official score on either the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing Systems (IELTS).
  • On the TOEFL, master\xc2\x92s or educational specialist applicants must achieve a score of 525 on the paper-based test, 197 on the computer-based version, or 71 on the Internet-based version. Doctoral applicants must achieve a score of 550 on the paper-based test, 213 on the computer-based version, or 79 on the Internet-based version.
  • On the IELTS, all applicants must make at least a 6.5.
  • If a student\xc2\x92s English skills are determined to be inadequate by faculty after beginning a program at UALR, they may be asked to take a placement test and/or further coursework in English.
  • Students who have studied full-time for two or more years at a college of university where English is the language of instruction located in a country where English is the native language may be exempt from the TOEFL/IELTS requirement. If this is your situation, please notify the Graduate School. The requirement cannot be waived until the Graduate School has received your transcripts.
  • A copy of all academic records. All applicants must provide transcripts from all universities attended (undergraduate and graduate). Transcripts that have not been articulated can be submitted for the application process, but before registering for classes the transcript must be articulated and submitted to the Graduate School.
  • For details on transcript articulation, students should contact WES; only WES-articulated transcripts will be accepted. We recommend the WES Basic Course-by-Course evaluation.
  • Proof of two MMR vaccines. All applicants must provide proof of a Tuberculosis screening, which must be performed in the United States of America and can be done at the Health Services Center at UALR. All students must also submit proof of two rounds of immunization for measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR). Proof of one MMR needs to be provided at the time of admission and the other is due by the end of the student\xc2\x92s first semester at UALR.
  • Additional program requirements. All programs have additional application requirements.
Admission requirements are as follows:
  • Baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution with a cumulative GPA of 2.75 (4.0 scale) or 3.0 in the last 60 hours
  • Two letters of recommendation (optional for students who have taken art courses at UALR during the three years previous to the application)
  • Statement of objectives and goals (500-1,000 words)
  • Graduate Record Examination (GRE) score is optional and may be submitted to bolster the application. (Application forms for some financial aid offered through UALR require information about the GRE score.)
