Admission Requirements

Academic Requirements

Transcripts and diplomas

Applicants should include transcripts showing all courses taken in each semester of their undergraduate (bachelor or equivalent) degree, as well as the diploma or certificate awarding them their degree. The transcript evaluation form, duly filled out by the university registrar, must accompany these documents for them to be considered valid.
For Indian applicants only: we only accept students who have a first class degree. We prefer students with a four-year undergraduate degree.

Required credits in design

Applicants need to have achieved minimum credit points in the following areas:

  • CAD (Pro/E or CATIA): 5 CP (=70 hours)
  • Design/Machine Elements: 15 CP (=210 hours)
  • Strength of Materials/Mechanics: 10 CP (=140 hours)
  • Mathematics: 8 CP (=112 hours)

English language requirements

We require an original international TOEFL (Test of English as a foreign Language) score of at least 530 points paper based, 197 points computer based, or 71 points internet based ibT (our code: 1680). An alternative to the TOEFL is an IELTS score of at least 6.0. We do not accept the ITP TOEFL test. These test scores will be sent direct from the test centre.
Native English speakers or applicants who have completed their undergraduate degree in English (certification from the university) are exempt from the English language test.

Applicants from India do not need to submit proof of English language proficiency.

German language requirements

German is a compulsory part of the Esslingen master\'s programs. Students do not receive credits for German but they have to demonstrate German language skills of at least Level A2 for admission to the third term (master\'s thesis). This is a study requirement: students who do not have these skills by the end of the second semester may be expelled from their graduate program.
To meet this requirement, it is therefore necessary to have already completed Level A1/Goethe II before arrival in September. The Graduate School offers German courses from level A2-B2 but not beginners\' courses.
Applicants who include a certificate demonstrating at least level A1 German may be given preferential treatment.

APS: applicants whose first degree is from PR China, Vietnam or Mongolia

All applicants whose first degree was completed in the PR China, Vietnam or Mongolia must include the APS (Academic Examination Service) with their application.
Chinese applicants are encouraged to apply before the end of January: this gives them a better chance of applying for a visa early.

English Proficiency: IELTS 6 or equivalent.
