Admission Requirements

Academic Requirements

Applicants must have a bachelor\xc2\x92s degree relevant to this program, which typically includes science and engineering. Additionally, backgrounds in economic, business, policy, and social sciences will be considered. Applicants should demonstrate strong evidence supporting the prospect that they will become successful researchers and professionals. These include excellent performance in relevant coursework, past research results if any, and strong recommendation letters. Applicants with prior research experience are preferred, especially for the Ph.D. program.

Applicants are required to take the IELTS or TOEFL exam in order to demonstrate their proficiency in English. Applicants who are fluent in English may be exempt from this requirement.

Applicants to the Ph.D. programs in Sustainable Energy and Sustainable Environment must have taken the GRE exam within the last two years. While not required for the master\xc2\x92s programs the GRE exam is recommended and will strengthen an applicant\xc2\x92s submission. Applicants coming from an economics, policy and other social science background may submit results of the GMAT exam as an alternative to the GRE.

  • Academic transcripts
Applicants should have original academic transcripts mailed directly to HBKU from the issuing institution. In addition, electronic copies should be submitted as part of the online application process to expedite the admissions process.

Final transcripts are required for all previous university studies. For those who have not completed their current studies, transcripts must include results from the last completed semester of coursework. Transcripts in languages other than English or Arabic must be accompanied with an official translation. Please note all documents submitted will not be returned.

  • Standardized test results
Official copies of standardized test results (TOEFL, IELTS, GRE, GMAT) must be sent directly to HBKU: GRE, GMAT, TOEFL
IELTS: No code required. Students should ask the IELTS center where they tested to send the IELTS TRF to Hamad bin Khalifa University, Qatar.
Applicants should also submit copies of their test scores with their online application to expedite the admissions process.
  • Letters of recommendation
Applicants should submit at least two letters of recommendation, one of which must be from an academic referee. Referees should send their letters of recommendation from their professional email directly to hbku.cse@qf.org.qa. Letters which are not directly written for this program or which are incomplete will not be accepted.
  • Personal statement of interest
A personal statement that explains why the candidate is applying to the Sustainable Energy or Sustainable Environment graduate programs and how their studies will contribute to the achievement of their personal objectives including information about the applicants research interests and achievements. (500 word limit)
  • Resume/curriculum vitae
Applicants should submit a copy of their current resume or curriculum vitae with the online application.
  • Identification document
Applicants should submit an electronic copy of their passport (or national ID for Qatar residents) as part of the online application.
