Program Curriculum
Course Structure
- Option A (Thesis Option): Students choosing the Thesis Option will pursue advanced studies in a particular area of interest and will then conduct a research project under the supervision of program faculty that will culminate in a thesis.
- Option B (Internship Option): Students selecting the Internship Option will pursue advanced studies in a chosen area and engage in an internship project, which involves 100 hours of field work in a setting that involves the care or education of children and a comprehensive Internship Report based on this experience.
Admission Requirements
Academic Requirements
Applicants to the program culminating in the degree of Master of Arts in Child Studies are selected on the basis of past academic performance, letters of recommendation, field experience, and the relevance of their individual interests to the areas of specialization of the program faculty. To be accepted into the program, a student is required to have an undergraduate degree with a minimum GPA of 3.0 and a significant concentration of courses in child studies, education, or a related discipline. In addition, at least one year of professional experience in the field of childcare, education, or a related area or areas is desirable.

Applicants must complete a Graduate Admission Application and submit supporting documents to the Graduate Admissions Application Centre:

- 3 letters of reference (academic assessment forms are available on the application site). Two academic references are required and one should be professional.
- Statement of purpose
- Permanent Residents, neither English nor French speaking: English Department Placement Test and must achieve the level of ENGL 212 or higher
- International applicants whose first language is neither English nor French: iBTOEFL (90+) or paper-based TOEFL (577+), or IELTS (7.0+).
- Official transcripts (graduate and undergraduate) for all previous university studies (complete and incomplete); if the transcript is in a language other than English or French, official translations are required along with the original language transcripts.
- Proof of Canadian citizenship, Permanent resident status, or refugee status.
English Proficiency: IELTS 7 or equivalent.
