Program Curriculum

Course Structure

  1. One course in American Literature, one in English Literature before 1660, one in English literature after 1660, and one additional course in the thesis area.
  2. Five electives (one of which may, with justification and the approval of the Graduate Director, be taken outside the Department).
  3. Three hours of thesis writing. Your thesis director will supervise this course.

Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to 3 on a US 4.0 grading scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on a 4.0 scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).

Applicants for admission to the MA program must have completed a minimum of 24 semester hours of upper-division undergraduate courses in English or an appropriate related discipline, with grades indicating ability for successful graduate work. Successful applicants to the MA program typically have GRE verbal scores at or above the 75th percentile and an undergraduate GPA of 3.00 or better. (Note: Applicants for admission to the MA program in literature must also submit GRE subject test scores to the Graduate School.)
