Program Curriculum
Course Structure
- 3 hours (1 course) on Methods or Theory appropriate to different areas of focus in Literary Studies: ordinarily 708, 709, 800, or another course appropriately designated by the Graduate Director. A 998 (Directed Reading) directly focused on questions of methods and theory can fulfill this requirement if approved by the Graduate Director.
- 3 hours (1 course) on Pedagogy: the 801-802 sequence (required for TAs), 780, or other appropriate course as approved by the Graduate Director.
- 18 (6 courses with\xa0thesis option) or 21 (7 courses with\xa0exam option) distribution hours to be selected in consultation with advisors (Graduate Director during first year and thereafter advisors with whom students plan to move toward exam or thesis options).\xa0At least one course must be pre-1700; at least one must be 1700-1900; and at least one must be after 1900.\xa0Two courses (6 hours) outside the department may be included in the 18 distribution hours with approval of the Graduate Director.

Academic Requirements
- MA and PHD Literature and Composition\xc2\xa0- Two examples of academic writing.
- A resum\xc3\xa9 or curriculum vitae.
- A statement of approximately 500 words describing your interests, training, experience (including teaching experience), academic ability, and goals.
- Letters of recommendation from three professors. Letters may be submitted electronically through the online application (see page 5), or submitted on the institution\'s letterhead, in a sealed envelope, addressed directly to the Graduate Director (see under Application Fees).\xc2\xa0
- Copies of GRE scores in the General Aptitude Test, taken within five years of application date. These tests should be taken well in advance of the application deadline of December 31.\xc2\xa0
- Transcripts attached to page 6 of online application.
- English Proficiency Scores (TOEFL or IELTS) if native language is not English.
