Admission Requirements

Academic Requirements

Students seeking admission to the Master\'s programme "English, American, and Anglophone Studies" must meet the following requirements:

  • Applicants must hold a Bachelor\'s degree or equivalent qualification from a programme that covered English / American studies, modern English literatures and cultures / postcolonial studies. They must provide proof of subject-related academic competency as follows: at least 83 CP in the case of students studying "English, American, and Anglophone Studies" as their main (major) subject, or at least 63 CP for those taking it as their subsidiary (minor) subject. If equivalence of qualification cannot be demonstrated, the Examination Committee may agree to provisionally admit applicants to the programme subject to certain conditions being met.
  • In order to demonstrate their aptitude for the Master\'s programme (irrespective of whether the subject will be studied as the main or subsidiary subject), applicants must have attained a grade of at least "good" (2.0 on the German academic grading scale) in the required Bachelor or equivalent degree. If this is not the case, applicants may be able to demonstrate aptitude on the basis of their letter of application and/or admissions interview. In such cases, applicants will also need to demonstrate an excellent command of English (level C1 of the Common European Framework). Applicants will be considered to have achieved this level of language proficiency if they obtained a score of at least 6.5 points in the IELTS exam or have a TOEFL score of at least 550. If the applicant has a first degree in linguistics in which the main focus was not English linguistics, the applicant must take a language proficiency exam irrespective of the class or grade attained in the final degree. A language proficiency test will not be required if the applicant\'s native language is English.
