Program Curriculum
Course content
You’ll get to choose whether to specialise more in an economic or natural science direction, and can choose a dissertation project in either area (also with a placement option). Whichever pathway you choose, you’ll develop as an effective interdisciplinary thinker, able to bridge diverse disciplines to help tackle the climate and ecological emergencies: the defining issues of our times.

Examples can be found below. Some option module combinations may not be possible. The options available to you will be confirmed after you begin your course. Business and Environment Environmental Management in Practice Spatial Analysis and Modelling for Flood Risk Management Climate Science and Policy Sustainability Clinic Our modules may change to reflect the latest academic thinking and expertise of our staff, and in line with Department/School academic planning. Dissertation Dissertation or Dissertation with Placement You will complete an 8,000-word dissertation as part of this MSc. This dissertation can either be York based, or as a placement with an external partner. For the former, staff in the Department will suggest a range of possible subjects and titles, but you can also devise your own title. For the latter, the dissertation topic will be of relevance to the external partner. For both types of dissertation, you will have a departmental supervisor who will provide regular guidance and will be able to comment on drafts of your dissertation. If you are undertaking a placement for your dissertation, you will receive additional guidance from a project supervisor. Fighting windmills: participation and fishermen’s attitudes towards offshore wind farms within the German EEZ An investigation into the drivers and barriers of urban agriculture in the United Kingdom The efficacy of ecosystem service valuation, using benefit transfer methods, as a tool for decision-making in the context of a developing country: a case study of the Kilombero wetlands, Tanzania Students have taken placements with organisations including: Fera Science Ltd Arcus Consulting ERM South Africa Marstons Stockbridge Technology Centre Harewood House The dissertation will allow you to demonstrate your skill at independent research, and apply insights from the taught modules to solve issues in environmental economics and environmental management.

| Undergraduate degree | 2:2 or equivalent. We will also consider your application if you have relevant work experience. Ideally you will have studied both some ecology and some economics as part of your degree but applications from students from either discipline are welcome. If you did not have a significant quantitative component to your degree you may also be considered with a requirement to attend a Summer School in Microeconomics and Quantitative Methods. |
