Admission Requirements

Academic Requirements

A-level
Grades AAA including chemistry and one other science or maths subject.There is a requirement to pass the practical assessment in the newly reformed science A Levels.
AS-level
We consider 2 AS Levels in science subjects and/or mathematics in place of a third A Level on an individual basis. Please contact the Admissions Office for further information.

General Studies
Unit grade information
The University of Manchester welcomes the provision of unit grade information which, like all other available information, will inform the consideration of applications. Unit grades will not normally form part of offer conditions, except for Mathematics programmes.
GCSE
The University does not have a blanket policy on preferred subjects at GCSE, aside from English Language and Maths which are required at a minimum of Grade C or above (Grade 4 for applicants holding newly reformed GCSEs in England). For a degree in Chemistry, we also require GCSEs in science subjects with good grades at a minimum of Grade C or above (Grade 4 for applicants holding newly reformed GCSEs in England). In addition, at least grade A at GCSE Level (Grade 7 for applicants holding newly reformed GCSEs in England) in an appropriate European Language for students wishing to enrol at a mainland European university in Year 3.Applied GCSE Mathematics courses (e.g. WJEC Mathematics - Numeracy) are not accepted for entry to a Chemistry course.
Key Skills qualification
The University warmly welcomes applications from students studying the Key Skills qualification. However, as the opportunities to take these modules are not open to all applicants, currently this is not an essential requirement of the University.
International Baccalaureate
36 points overall with a grade of 6 in each of 3 Higher Level subjects to include Chemistry and one other science or maths. If English is not offered as one of the Diploma subjects (SL or HL) then a score of 6.0 at IELTS (or an equivalent approved qualification) must be offered.
Academic entry qualification overview
