Admission Requirements
Academic Requirements
You need the following GPA score:
Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to 3 on a US 4.0 grading scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on a 4.0 scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).
Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).
ELIGIBILITY
To be eligible for admission for graduate study at UNC Wilmington applicants must:
- Hold a bachelor\'s degree from a regionally accredited college or university in this country or its equivalent in a foreign institution. The Graduate School will determine equivalency of international baccalaureate degrees.
- Have a strong overall academic record with a B average or better in the basic courses prerequisite to the area of proposed graduate study.
- Meet any additional admission requirement(s) as outlined by the graduate program.
RECOMMENDATIONS
Recommendations are required by some, but not all, programs. Recommendations are completed and must be submitted through the online application. During the application process, applicants will be prompted to enter the names and contact information of their recommenders. Once the recommender information has been saved, an e-mail notification will be sent on the applicant\xc2\x92s behalf, prompting the recommender to complete the form. TEST SCORES
Test Scores dated older than five years are not acceptable. Official scores must be sent directly to the Graduate School at UNCW. Make sure to include your full name, birthdate, and gender on your test scores. Failure to do so may delay the processing of your application. If the exam will be taken at a later date (no later than four weeks prior to the published program deadline) you may enter the date the exam will be taken and submit the application. Please note that official scores still need to be sent to the Graduate School if the exam is taken at a later date.
APPLICATION FEE
A $60 USD (non-transferrable and non-refundable) application fee is due upon submission and is payable by MasterCard or Visa via the online application.
TRANSCRIPTS
The Graduate School requires one (1) official transcript (official transcripts are received in a sealed envelope from the awarding institution or electronically delivered via an approved third party vendor) from each university, college, community college, junior college and high school dual enrollment institution attended. Transfer credit listed on another institution\'s transcript is not acceptable. If you do not request one (1) official transcript from each institution attended, the processing of your application will be delayed.
DEPARTMENT REQUIREMENTS
Applicants seeking admission to the Master of Science in Environmental Studies program are required to submit the following to the Graduate School:
- An application for graduate admission
- Official transcripts of all prior university or college work (undergraduate and graduate)
- Official scores on the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) less than five years old
- Three recommendations by individuals in professionally relevant fields
- An essay describing educational and professional experiences, reasons for pursuing graduate study in environmental studies and career goals
- Optional writing sample
Applicants seeking admission to the program must meet the following requirements:
- Successful completion of a bachelor\xc2\x92s degree from an accredited university or college, or its equivalent (due to the diversity of areas of emphasis within the program, it is not required that the successful applicant possess a degree in Environmental Studies)
- Strong academic performance in an undergraduate curriculum indicated by a minimum of a GPA of 3.0 or higher, or its equivalent
- Indication of graduate academic potential reflected by satisfactory performance on the Graduate Record Examination
- Indication of graduate academic potential reflected by three letters of recommendation from individuals in professionally relevant fields
- Concurrency of personal goals with the focus of the environmental studies graduate curriculum
