Academic Requirements

English Language Proficiency

Proficiency in English is required for graduate study at the University of Washington. Therefore, every applicant whose native language is not English must demonstrate English language proficiency. Information regarding the English language proficiency requirement is available on the UW Graduate School Web site.

TOEFL Information: The minimum score needed is 580 on the TOEFL or 92 on the TOEFLiBT. TOEFL scores are valid for two years and must be sent directly to the University of Washington (school code 4854). Proof of Financial Ability

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security-(DHS), and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement-(ICE), mandate all schools, including the University of Washington verify certification of adequate financial support from each international applicant without resorting to unauthorized employment.

International applicants must submit the Statement of Financial Ability Form with supporting official financial documentation showing adequate financial resources to cover the cost of at least the first year of study before a Certificate of Eligibility (I-20 or IAP-66) can be issued.
