Program Overview

The Bachelor's degree program in Geodesy and Earth Observation focuses on the precise monitoring and mapping of the Earth and its habitats. State-of-the-art monitoring, modeling, and processing methods are used to generate high-quality geoinformation that is indispensable for a wide range of social and scientific tasks. The data obtained by geodesists provides legal certainty for official surveys and forms an important basis for creative and regulatory measures in land management. In addition, geodetic measurement and Earth observation methods provide a unique database for disaster management, environmental risk assessment, and research on the Earth system, global change, and the planet. Education in geodesy therefore plays an important role in society. The use of digital technologies and modern analysis strategies is an integral part of the bachelor's program in Geodesy and Earth Observation and provides an integrated, comprehensive foundation in the entire field. The objective of Geodesy and Earth observation is the detailed recording of the human habitat. Through precise measurements, the processing of geoinformation, and its targeted presentation, geodesists describe our environment, classify it according to relevant characteristics, and contribute their expertise to shaping changes.

Program Curriculum

The standard period of study for the Bachelor's program in Geodesy and Earth Observation (GEObs) is 6 semesters (180 ECTS), with studies beginning in the winter semester. The credit load for each semester is 30 ECTS, with no more than six exams to be taken per semester. The program comprises five categories of modules: basic and orientation exams (GOPs), GEObs core modules, GEObs elective modules, free elective modules, and a bachelor's thesis. GOPs, GEObs core modules, and the bachelor's thesis are compulsory, while GEObs electives and free electives can be freely chosen from a catalog of electives provided. The basic and orientation exams (GOPs) must be successfully passed within the first 2 semesters. In semesters 1 to 4, there are 18 core GEObs modules to be completed. They define the fundamentals of all disciplines of geodesy and Earth observation, from modern engineering geodesy to photogrammetry, remote sensing from the ground, air, and space, satellite geodesy, Earth surveying and modeling, cartography, and geoinformatics to land management. They build on each other to some extent, starting with the basics, which are expanded upon with more in-depth knowledge and advanced methodological approaches. The content is then further deepened in the GEObs electives, which allow students to focus on individual topics, methods, and skills. GEObs elective modules can be chosen in semesters 4 to 6. The elective areas give students the opportunity to orient themselves in a specific direction in order to prepare for a master's degree in their individual field of interest or to pursue a professional profile in a specific subject area. The list of GEObs elective modules includes various modules offered in the summer and winter semesters. Students must select at least 10 of these modules. The degree program concludes with a bachelor's thesis, in which the methodological, technical, and practical skills acquired are brought together in their application.

Admission Requirements
