Academic Requirements
To apply to the Ross School of Business, we ask that you submit a variety of materials for us to best assess your qualifications. Below is a list of the application components we require. Each piece of the application plays an integral role in the overall admission evaluation; no single piece of the application is weighted more heavily than another. Please note that ALL materials need to be received by the posted deadline for the round in which you apply.
- One- to two-page resume that highlights your work experience, education, academic focus, honors you\xc2\x92ve received, accomplishments, and organizations to which you belong. Your resume may also include specific skills such as languages, personal interests, and significant activities.
- GMAT or GRE results (valid for five years from the date you took the test to the deadline date when you apply). Ross\' GRE reporting code is 1839; there is no code required for the GMAT.
- If your native language is not English, TOEFL or IELTS results (valid for two years from the date you took the test to the deadline date when you apply). Ross\xc2\x92 TOEFL reporting code is 1839. Applicants who have completed an undergraduate degree from an accredited institution where the sole language of instruction was English are exempt from the TOEFL/IELTS requirement. Those who have worked in the U.S. full-time for two or more years in the past five years, may also waive the TOEFL/IELTS requirement.
- Official undergraduate and post-graduate transcripts. Transcripts bearing the official seal and signature of the issuing institution in a sealed envelope should be delivered to Global MBA Admissions, Stephen M. Ross School of Business, University of Michigan, 701 Tappan, ER3604, Ann Arbor, Michigan 48109-1234 by the application deadline. Ross requires one copy of both your academic record and the diploma or other document indicating the date and conferral of your degree, years of attendance, courses taken and grades received. If the original language of your academic record is not English, a literal translation must be submitted.
- One letter of recommendation (must be submitted online) from a person who has been directly responsible for assessing your professional performance, preferably, a current employer or direct supervisor.
- Essay responses to the required essay questions should be individually uploaded in the required format (minimum 11-point font and 1.5 line spacing). Responses should be limited to the word maximums indicated.
- Sponsorship Application for Global MBA Admission (available in the Program Partners section of our website) may be uploaded in the Additional Information section of the online application or sent to Global MBA Admissions.
- Nonrefundable U.S. $200 application fee.
- Interview (arranged after application is submitted).

GLOBAL MBA RECOMMENDATION QUESTIONS
IMPORTANT: This is NOT the official letter of recommendation, but rather a list of the questions that will be sent to the individual you identify as your recommender in the online application. These questions are provided to help you determine whom to request to write your recommendation letter. The actual recommendation letter and ratings form must be submitted online by your recommender.
Once you register your recommender on the application, an email will be sent with instructions on how to access the recommendation form and submit it electronically.
- How do the candidate\xc2\x92s performance, potential, or personal qualities compare to those of other well-qualified individuals in similar roles? Please provide specific examples. (300 words)
- Please describe the most important piece of constructive feedback you have given the applicant. Please detail the circumstances and the applicant\xc2\x92s response. (250 words).
Criteria
In order to build a strong and diverse class, we look for applicants who possess a number of key characteristics:
- Strong intellectual ability as measured by GMAT and academic record.
- Leadership, initiative, and impact as evidenced through professional achievements, extracurricular activities, recommendation letters, and personal essays.
- Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills as demonstrated through recommendation letters, essays, and interview.
- Clear goals and rationale for pursuing an MBA as demonstrated through essays and interview.
- Fit with the Ross approach to management education as demonstrated through essays and interview.
Additionally:
- Traditional business background not required. Applicants from non-business fields such as medicine, law, and public administration are welcome to apply.
- No \xc2\x93formula\xc2\x94 or \xc2\x93cutoff\xc2\x94 determines a candidate\xc2\x92s outcome.
- There are no prerequisite courses for admission, however, due to the analytical rigor of the program, it is expected that you have a working knowledge of college-level mathematics, including basic calculus. If you have not had this coursework, we recommend that you take a course that emphasizes business mathematics prior to beginning the program.
English Proficiency: IELTS 6.5 or equivalent.
