Course Structure

  1. Understand cutting edge conceptual debates in global urban development theory and practice, by exploring analytical approaches and relating these to operational frameworks for policy, planning and programming to promote more equitable and sustainable urban development in cities and towns of the South.
  2. Provide participants with the analytical skills to deepen their knowledge of global urban development and planning theories, as well as identifying, investigating and justifying possible solutions to problems arising out of theory and practice. This includes competency in developing reasoned arguments, finding commonalities and differences, and defending different approaches.
  3. Develop student skills in gathering, organising and using evidence and information from a wide variety of sources. This will be complemented by guidance on how best to manage workloads and obtain research materials.
  4. Enable MSc students to develop their areas of expertise through relevant research areas culminating in a dissertation.

Admission Requirements

Academic Requirements

Applicants should have a good first degree (minimum 2:1 or equivalent) from an approved university.

Admission of candidates who do not meet this criterion may be approved if satisfactory evidence of postgraduate study, research or professional experience can be provided.

English language

Applicants whose first language is not English should meet the following language requirements:

  • IELTS 6.5 overall, 6.5 in writing, no sub-section below 6.0 or

  • TOEFL internet-based test score of 90 or more overall, with a minimum writing score of 22 and no other subsection below 20

  • Pearson PTE overall score of 59 with a minimum score of 59 in writing and 51 in the other subsections or

  • Cambridge CAE or Cambridge CPE grade C (Please note that the Cambridge First Certificate in English is not acceptable)

We will consider applicants who do not meet these scores but you may be required to attend a pre-sessional English language course at the University of Manchester, or to demonstrate an improvement in your language scores prior to the start of your course.

Some English language test results are only valid for two years. Your English language test report must be valid on the start date of your course.
