Admission Requirements

Academic Requirements

  • For Ph.D. program candidates, the basic requirement is completion of the B.A. with a major in History or the equivalent (18 to 24 credit-hours of upper-level History courses), or the M.A. in History. The M.A. in Global, International, and Comparative History program will consider applicants who have completed a BA or equivalent degree in History, a social science, or literature and culture.
  • The General Test of the Graduate Record Examination (see below).
  • The applicant should submit a writing sample, such as a term paper. We very strongly recommend submission of a research paper based on primary sources.
  • The applicant should also submit a statement of purpose (500 words) on undertaking graduate work in history.
  • Three letters of recommendation, official transcripts and an application fee are also required.
  • The Admissions Committee will make its decisions based upon the composite picture of the applicant derived from grade transcripts, the GRE, recommendations, and demonstrated capacity for research and writing.
