Academic Requirements
Applicants should have a B.A. Honours or equivalent in History with a B+ or higher (78%) level of performance over the last two years and within the major. Applicants must also provide undergraduate transcripts.
Candidates for the M.A. program in History will be judged based on three criteria: letters of reference, statement of interest, and grades. Letters of reference must be obtained from three professors, preferably those who are most familiar with the candidates work. The statement of interest should be a maximum of two pages, double-spaced (i.e., 500 words), and clearly identify the candidates intended research field. Students may be admitted to the program beginning in September or January. For consideration for the September term, we encourage applicants to apply by February 15th. For the January term, applications should be completed by November 1st. Later applications will still be considered but may not be eligible for full financial support.
Language Requirements
For admission to a degree program, a student must meet one of the language requirements listed below in addition to the academic requirements:
- Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) (minimum score: 230 computer-based, 570 paper-based, 88 Internet-based)
- International English Language Testing System (IELTS - Academic)(minimum score: 6.5)
- Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB) (minimum score: 85)
- Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) Assessment Test (minimum score: 70, with 60 in writing proficiency)
- Cambridge English Proficiency (minimum result: C)
- Pearson Test of Academic English (PTE) (minimum score: 60)
- Three years of full time senior-level studies in an English-language secondary school or post-secondary institution (official documents required) (evaluated on an individual basis; at the Admissions Committee\'s discretion)
- Laurentian EAP Level 3 exam with a score of 70% or higher
English Proficiency: IELTS 6.5 or equivalent.
