Academic Requirements
Master\'s students are required to complete eight classes (30-32 credits), which can be completed with one year of full-time study (three courses each in the fall and spring, and two courses over the summer). At least six of these courses must be taken within the history department, and students must maintain a \'B\' (3.0) average in their coursework to qualify for their degree or
MA students are also required to complete a research paper (40-60 pages) on which they will be orally examined by two professors. Each field of study has a different procedure for this final research paper:
- Students concentrating in medieval history will develop a proposal and research paper through the proseminar/seminar sequence.
- Students concentrating in modern history will develop (normally within their coursework) a research proposal in the fall semester. In the spring, they will complete the project by taking a research tutorial with a faculty member in which they produce a research proposal and a research colloquium.
