Course Structure
- HIST 5304 (during the first semester it is offered after admission) 3 hours
- HIST 6301 (during the first semester it is offered after completion of 5304) 3 hours
- Geographic Area of Concentration 12 hours
- Electives (of which 6 hours must be outside the Geographic Area of Concentration) 12 hours
- Thesis (6000) 6 hours

Admission Requirements
Academic Requirements
- Contact members of the department faculty with whom you wish to study to discuss the possibility of working with them.
- Complete the Department of History application. There is no application fee for the department.
- Send official transcripts of all post-secondary work to the Department of History.
- Take the GRE general exam and have your official scores sent to Texas Tech University. We will accept official GRE scores from the previous five years. There is no preset minimum score on the GRE for admission.
- Have three referees (preferably those familiar with your academic record) submit letters of recommendation to the Department of History. Letter writers may email the electronic version of their letter to the Graduate Studies Coordinator.
- Submit a statement of purpose outlining your reasons for wanting to study history at the graduate level, your goals in the field, and your particular strengths and aptitudes for graduate study in history.
- Submit a 10 to 20 page writing sample such as a thesis chapter, research paper, or some other written work indicative of your abilities as a writer and researcher.
English Proficiency: IELTS 6.5 or equivalent.
