Academic Requirements
You should have an undergraduate honours degree, which we strongly recommend should be in History or a closely related subject. Or, if you have a degree without honours you must also have successfully completed the collaborative course Advanced Diploma in Local History. MA History part 1 assumes that a candidate for a masters degree already has the skills and experience usually acquired by pursuing the subject of History at undergraduate level. In addition, you should be aware that a good degree (at least a 2.1 or equivalent) will greatly increase your chances of successfully completing the MA. If you have any doubt about the suitability of the module, please speak to an adviser.
Outside the UK
While it would be theoretically possible to study elsewhere, the module has as its prime target those wishing to study in Britain and Ireland. You will need physical access to historical records (such as those held in libraries, archives or record offices) within Britain or Ireland to complete the module.
Preparatory work
The course Advanced Diploma in Local History, offered in collaboration with Oxford University Department of Continuing Education, is recommended as suitable preparation if your undergraduate degree is not in History or a closely related subject.You are encouraged to read the main set book before beginning the MA and to locate any potentially useful research libraries in your local area.
