Academic Requirements
If you\'re interested in studying the Master of Teaching you\'ll need to meet the following requirements:
Teacher Capability Assessment Tool (TCAT)
All applicants will be required to sit the Teacher Capability Assessment Tool (TCAT).\xc2\xa0TCAT\xc2\xa0is used to assist in the selection of students into all Initial Teacher Education (ITE) courses at the University of Tasmania. TCAT is an online aptitude test (cognitive and non-cognitive capabilities) and is used in conjunction with your ATAR score (or equivalent alternative entry.)
After completing your Application, you will be sent information on accessing TCAT testing. You will need to complete your TCAT within two weeks after submitting your application.
*From 2017, all Initial Teacher Education (ITE) courses in Australia will be required to select entrants on basis of both cognitive and non-cognitive skills and abilities.
Domestic Students
The minimum entry requirements, for all students, is the completion of a Bachelor\'s degree in a non-education discipline at an approved tertiary education institute.
Primary specialisation
Subject content studies in your initial degree should contain a minimum of one year of study relevant to at least one of the key learning areas of the Primary school curriculum. The Key Learning areas are listed below
Key Learning Areas -\xc2\xa0The Key Learning Areas are: English; Mathematics; Science and Technology; Human Society and its Environment; Creative and Practical Arts; Personal Development, Health and Physical Education, and Languages other than English.
Secondary specialisation
The first teaching specialisation requires at least three years of degree level study leading to a completed bachelor degree, including, at least, two units at third year (advanced) level or above.
AND
The second teaching specialisation requires at least two years of degree level study, including, at least, two units at second year (Intermediate) level or above.
Curriculum areas:\xc2\xa0These entry requirements relate to the following secondary curriculum areas all of which can be studied as either a first or second teaching specialisation: English; Mathematics; Science; SOSE; LOTE;\xc2\xa0 Arts (Visual Art; Drama; Music) and Religious Education. Arts (Visual Art; Drama; Music) may also be taken as a double teaching specialisation.
If you are intending to teach in a state other than Tasmania it is your responsibility to ensure that you meet the relevant specialist subject requirements for admittance for the state in which you intend to teach.\xc2\xa0
International Students
In addition to the entry requirements listed above, international students who are nationals of and currently residing in a country where English is NOT the official language, evidence of an IELTS or TOEFL test must be provided. The Master of Teaching requires an (IELTS) average of 7.5 with no band lower than 7.0 and Listening and Speaking at 8.0.
English Proficiency: IELTS 7.5 or equivalent.
