Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of 3 or better on a 4.0 scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).

  • Bachelor\xc2\x92s degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum 3.0 grade point average in an approved field of study, e.g., Indigenous Studies, Ethnic Studies, Education, Languages (including English), etc.;
  • Three letters of recommendation at least one of which must focus on the applicant\xc2\x92s background in the Hawaiian language and culture and service to the Hawaiian community;
  • 30 credits of study in Hawaiian language\xc2\xa0
  • 9 credits of study in the Hawaiian culture or a program approved combination of Hawaiian culture and related social science courses such as Anthropology and Sociology with no grade lower than a \xc2\x93B\xc2\x94 and a 3.0 average;
  • Teaching experience, either paid or volunteer;
