Admission Requirements

Academic Requirements

You need the following GPA score:

Required score: 2.75

Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to 2.75 on a US 4.0 grading scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on a 4.0 scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).

  • Grade point average (GPA) of 2.75 in the last 60 units of undergraduate work with a 3.0 GPA preferred).
  • Completion of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) with scores submitted as part of the application (i.e. prior to admission).

a. Typical scores for those accepted into the graduate program include Verbal: >150, Quantitative: >150, Writing: >3.7

  • Submission of the following on CSU mentor:
a. Three letters of recommendation
b. Statement of Intent discussing the applicant\'s interest and goals as they relate to a graduate degree in Kinesiology.

Admissions for Students with Majors Other than Kinesiology:

If a prospective graduate student has a baccalaureate degree in a field other than Kinesiology or Exercise Science, he/she may be required to complete foundational upper-division undergraduate coursework in kinesiology depedning on their undergraduate course list and/or degree objective. Students must consult with the Graduate Coordinator and major advisor before enrolling in foundational courses. The courses, which vary depending on the student\xc2\x92s academic background and program goals, may be taken at HSU or another college/university. Students without a bachelors degree in kinesiology will complete 12-15 units of foundational coursework. This foundational course work will take into account established prerequisites for courses. All prospective master\xc2\x92s students are required to contact the faculty member who they are interested in working with prior to applying. Only students who meet the minimum requirements and who have identified a faculty member willing to be their advisor will be considered for acceptance into the Master\xc2\x92s program. Students that are interested in enrolling in the graduate program are encouraged to visit the web sites of Kinesiology faculty to obtain more information about their research interests.

There are two ways to meet the English proficiency requirement for graduate admission to Humboldt State University.

  • A minimum TOEFL score of 550 (213 on computer-based test; 80 on internet-based test) that was received within two years of applying to HSU. The score must be sent to us directly by the Educational Testing Service (ETS);

OR

  • A minimum IELTS score of 6.5 that was received within two years of applying to HSU. The score must be sent to us directly by the International English Language Testing Service (IELTS).

English Proficiency: IELTS 6.5 or equivalent.
