Program Curriculum

Course Structure

  1. Overall levels of achievement will be assessed by the final examination, the extended essayand the viva(oral examination) if requested by the examiners. These summative assessments will assess the extent to which students are able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the points outlined above. The process and production of the extended essay will test the students ability to work independently and demonstrate their ability to use the disciplinary skills they have acquired.
  2. Formative assessment will provide regular feedback on progress through tutorials, comment on student presentations, and project work and work with teaching staff on particular research questions. This ongoing feedback will allow for comment on individual strengths and weaknesses and allow for identification of any remedial action that may be required

Admission Requirements

Academic Requirements

Applicants will be asked to provide:

  • Evidence of completion of a First or Upper Second Class (or equivalent) honours degree (including a transcript of previous results), and an interest in Latin American Studies.
  • A personal statement giving reasons for applying for the course.
  • For those whose first language is not English, minimum scores in one of the standard language tests (IELTS, TOEFL, Cambridge CPE) are a requirement for admission. These are as follows:
    • IELTS: an overall score of 7.5, with at least 7.0 in each component;
    • TOEFL: an overall score of 630 with a Test of Written English score of 5.
    • Applicants who have taken the computer-based TOEFL test must achieve an overall score of 267 with an essay-writing score of 5;
    • for the Computer-based TOEFL an overall of 109;
    • Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) Grade B.
  • Two confidential academic references
  • Two pieces of written work, written in the applicant\xc2\xb4s own English (ie. not professionally translated) and usually about 2,000 words in length.
  • A C.V.
